Small Groups are a terrific way to build lifelong
friendships, learn more about the Bible and grow stronger
spiritually. At Crossroads Community Church, we seek to connect
our members to a more serious discipleship and a more serious
engagement of the world in which we live.
What is a Small Group? A Small Group is a small group of people who get together in homes for the
purpose of to build friendships, to learn more about Christian living, and to do life together.
Optimal size of a group is 12, and most Small Groups meet twice a month.
Why are Small Groups important?
As a church, we must grow larger and smaller at the same time. We
are called to live the Christian life with the support of others.
We need people who have the same desires we do, who will walk with us
on our path to a more serious relationship with Christ. Small groups offer accountability, encouragement, prayer and friendship support, and encourage participants and families to engage in outreach, local charitable work and life change.
Are Small Groups biblical?
In the book of Acts, Luke writes about the tremendous growth of the
first church in Jerusalem. Small groups meeting in homes were the
foundation of the early church. Acts 5:42 tells us that the
people met "In the temple courts" (large group worship) and "from house
to house" (small group fellowship). Jesus did much of his
ministry in homes. Early Christians met in homes for fellowship,
study and discipleship.
Why should I join a Small Group?
- To understand the Bible and Christianity better.
You can ask questions, participate in discussions and hear others share
their insights of the biblical truths they are trying to grasp.
You can share your struggles as well, and work toward problem
resolution. Confidentiality, honesty, and acceptance are core values in a Small Group.
- To provide support and accountability for each other.
The basic struggles we face are lifelong challenges such as being
faithful in prayer, Bible study, witnessing and growth in character and
integrity. The Bible instructs us to love one another, pray for
one another, bear one another's burdens and build up one another.
- To begin to feel like a part of God's family.
Building authentic relationships is a key focus of Small Groups.
- To allow prayer to become more meaningful to you.
There are many promises in the Bible related to the power of group
prayer. In praying together, we'll establish a bond like no
other, and experience the awesome power of prayer.
- To handle stress and pressure better. Small Groups provide excellent support in times of crisis, change and
stress. We'll help each other keep our eyes focused on Christ as
we juggle work, family and ministry demands, and find rest in our
hectic schedules.
How do I join a Small Group?
Most small groups begin at a First Group event. First Group is 2 hours of small group sampling. Participants sample aspects of small group life and have an opportunity to try out a small group for another 5 sessions... a try-before-you-buy experience!
First Group is a comfortable, short-term way to experience a slice of small group life for six sessions. Develop friendships with others and explore the dynamics of community, your faith and your next steps. When a new First Group begins, participants then decide together on new dates/times to gather for the following 5 sessions.
Our next First Group is Sunday, Januay 28, 5 – 6:30 pm in the Grand Lobby at the Christian Family Centre, where Crossroads meets every Sunday morning.
